fleur perry lang...

was immersed in art at an early age. She attended her grandmother’s art school in Paris, where she was encouraged to work freely on large surfaces, study art history, sculpting and learn classical technique by copying the masters. Born in London and raised in France, Fleur Perry Lang spent much of her childhood in museums and art galleries. While living in New Zealand for 2 years with her parents, Fleur had opportunities to travel to nearby Fiji, Tahiti and New Caledonia.

During her second year of law school in Paris, Perry Lang changed course and moved to New York, enrolling in NYU to study history and philosophy. During her fourteen years in New York City, she stayed true to her grandmother's teachings and continued working on large surfaces. She solidified her interest in large, colorful abstracts and explored ideas through graffiti, largely inspired by (her obsession with )Jean-Michel Basquiat.

Choosing acrylic paints that she finds at art stores, hardware stores and even Ikea children’s paint sets, Perry Lang often layers in personal journal entries and quotes of her favorite French poets in pastel. These are rendered illegible to remove any message that would influence the viewer's eye. Her works on canvas and wood are achieved through using various brush sizes and dripping paint from plastic cups with what appears to be endless layering. Perry Lang believes her fascination with color comes from her memories of Maori and Polynesian art. Some pieces are inspired by events in her life, and often ideas for paintings form from dreams. Elements of more recent works are a response to what she refers to as the "captivating light" in her new West Coast environment.
